IOWA QUILTERS GUILD
Finishing Techniques
| Calculating Fabric Requirements
for Binding
To make certain you have enough fabric to bind your quilt, use the following equations : (quilt length + quilt width) x 2 = quilt diameter Keep a fudge factor in mind to account for shrinkages and any mishaps and buy just a bit more than calculated with the above equation. If you are using a bias-cut binding, add a generous extra amount onto your total to make sure there are enough pieces of the proper length. |

QUILT STORAGE
When making a bag to put your quilt in for storing purposes or using a ready made bag, put a pocket on the outside of the bag using either a small version of the quilt block pattern of the quilt and/or fabric from the quilt inside the bag. This makes it easy to spot when you are trying to locate a particular quilt if you have it stored with several other quilts. The pocket can also be used to store some small pieces of the quilt fabric for mending sometime in the future if necessary. You can also put a little a little history about this quilt and even how much you paid to have it quilted if you are that brave to include such information. This extra information helps keep some of the information about the quilt easier to remember even if you do have most of this information on the label. You can also add additional information about the quilt that you don't have on the label for reference or keep handy when writing information if you are entering the quilt in a quilt show.
