JUDGE SCOTT MURKIN TO LEAD WORKSHOPS/LECTURE

In addition to being an NQA certified judge, Scott Murkin is a Family Practice and Occupational Medicine Specialist.  Originally from a quilting family in Illinois, he currently lives in North Carolina with his wife Mary and two children.  Scott designs original quilts for the bed and wall and exhibits nationally and internationally where he has won many awards.  Additionally, he has been published in numerous quilt magazines and has his textile artwork in prestigious public and private collections.  Scott has judged the quilt shows in both Houston and Paducah and will be a judge at the National Quilt Association show in Columbus this June.

Judge Scott Murkin also enjoys teaching and we feel fortunate to be able to offer two half day workshops on Thursday, July 17 led by him.  The morning workshop is called “Making Waves: Half-Square Triangles With a Twist.”  In this class, you will learn to sew half-square triangles on the curve without a template.  Curved piecing adds pizzazz to any work and this technique can be used to showcase the large-scale prints that we love to purchase but can’t figure out how to use them.  You will learn the technique for cutting and sewing these curved half-square triangle units.  Additionally, multiple setting and border options as well as alternative uses for this fun and addictive technique will be discussed.  If you don’t want to begin a whole quilt, there is a fabric option in the supply list which accommodates learning the technique.

The afternoon workshop is titled “Framed Diamonds”.  Whether you love tradition or innovation, you can let your creativity flow within a safe framework from which to experiment.  This quick, easy and accurate technique allows you to forget about the sewing and focus on designing.  While this class is primarily a technique class, you will be well on your way to a small art quilt top.  During class time, there will be a discussion of multiple ways to use this technique, including wearables and I Spy quilts.

On Thursday evening, there will be a lecture by Scott Murkin held at the Perry Elementary School entitled “Quilt as Desired”—the ending to too many quilt pattern directions.  Learn where to find inspiration and how to select patterns for hand or machine quilting with many examples of completed work showing the design process.   Please sign up for the workshops and the evening lecture on the event registration form by July 7th.  Registrations for the workshops will be open to non-guild members after June 1st, so don’t delay in sending in your information.  If you would like your supplies list sent via email, please indicate this on the form and be sure to include your email address.  You can view some of Scott Murkin’s quilts at www.scottmurkin.com.
