WE NEED YOU!

It requires many volunteers to plan, set-up and work the IQG biennial show. Specifically, during show week the committee needs much additional help with the show activities. On Tuesday and Wednesday judge’s helpers are needed to record the judge’s comments as scribes, place the quilts on the judging tables and remove and fold them after being judged. Additional crews are need to hang the quilts after they have been judged, making the show a “field of quilts”. Also, volunteers are needed on these days to help set up other display areas of the show and make the building a welcoming site. When the show opens on Friday we need people selling tickets at the admissions table, selling quilt raffle tickets, supervising areas (Fabric Dive, Magazine Sales), and as white glove host and hostesses throughout the different areas of the quilt show. Finally, we need people to help take the show down and pack all of our “stuff” for storage. Wow! Do we need people! Volunteer and have some fun!

There are several benefits to volunteering to help with the quilt show. In addition to working with fellow quilters from across the state, you will receive a free 2008 show pin, designed especially for our show, Sewing Fields of Quilts. Volunteers will also be given one free day’s admission for each shift worked. Additionally, there will be several door prize baskets and some special individual door prizes that will be given to those volunteers whose names are drawn—one entry for each shift worked. Also, several special evening activities have been planned for any show volunteers wishing to attend.

On Tuesday evening, Master Gardner Carloyn Magnani has agreed to host the volunteers as they tour her gardens. The tour will begin at 6:30 and should be a pleasant and relaxing evening, enjoying Carolyn’s beautiful gardens. She will have a desert for us at her home, but please plan to eat dinner on your own, either before or after the tour. As Carolyn lives in Johnston, many will need to travel from Perry to her house. Due to parking considerations, it will be necessary to share rides. If you are helping with the show on Tuesday, be sure to ask for the latest travel/car pool plans that day. As it will be necessary to have a count, please contact Jo Scharn if you plan to attend the garden tour. In case of light rain, bring your umbrella, but if the rain is heavy or the weather is stormy, the tour will be cancelled. Connie Doern of Creekside Quilting has said that she will keep her shop in Clive open until 6:15 this evening, just in case any traveling to the Des Moines area will desire to visit a quilt shop before the garden tour. This shop as been a good sponsor for IQG in the past and is also fairly close to Carolyn’s home.

Go south on Merle Hay to Winwood Drive which is just south of Caseys. If you find yourself heading south, you have missed Ceres Circle. Steet signs are on low cylinders. Directions coming from the south (I 35 & I80 on the north side of Des Moines). On Wednesday evening, plans are that the volunteers will visit the One-Woman show that will be held by Betty Lenz that day. You can read more information about Betty elsewhere in this newsletter as she is providing the Friday evening banquet lecture. The quilt exhibit will display many of Betty’s award winning quilts and will be different from the banquet lecture on Crazy Quilts. Betty’s quilt show will be held at the Spring Valley Retirement Community located at 501 – 12th St. in Perry; please see map elsewhere in this newsletter. While the One-Woman show will be open all day, it is scheduled that the volunteers will meet at the show site at 5:30 PM and tour the exhibit as a group. After the tour, it will be your choice to dine with the group at a local restaurant. Again, please contact Jo Scharn if you plan to dine with the group, so a reservation can be made in advance.
