September 2008 Annual Meeting

The IQG annual meeting will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Valley Assembly of God church in Valley Junction. Registration will begin at 8:30 AM with the meeting to begin promptly at 9:00 AM. We are returning to a once common annual meeting place with the hopes that this site will be convenient for many members. The church is located at 313 6th St., West Des Moines, just one block west of The Quilt Block. Mary at The Quilt Block, as agreed to host our meeting and the shop will be the site of the afternoon workshop.

Connie Sue Haidle from Webster City will provide a morning trunk show/lecture after the annual meeting and an afternoon workshop from 1:00 – 4:00, Paper Cut Applique using Back Basting.
Connie has been an avid quilter for many years and is a very experienced appliquér. She began her first appliqué project in 1966 and it is still unfinished. However, Connie has completed a great many other projects and she has been teaching classes since 1966, beginning with local classes. She began her business, Apple Blossom Quilts, in 2004 after retiring as a computer systems analyst/programer. She designs and sells her own patterns. Currently, she and her husband love to spend much time traveling in their RV. Of course, Connie likes to frequent quilt events and visit shops on their travels. Connie has attended two national Applique Society Quilt shows, one in Denver and the most recent in Tampa where she was a vendor.

Workshop plans are to work on a paper cut appliqué block using the back basting technique that Connie has used with great success. You will be able to select your workshop block from several of Connie’s paper cut patterns that will be available at the annual meeting and at the workshop. The paper cut designs vary in their degree of difficulty. To get some advance help with your block and fabric decisions, please look at Connie’s quilts and patterns on her website, www.appleblossomquilts.com. The back basting technique can be applied to many other appliqué patterns and even some of your own paper cut patterns that you might design after attending the workshop.

Due to time constraints between the annual meeting and the afternoon workshop, The Quilt Block has volunteered to obtain a box lunch for workshop participants who desire to take advantage of this offer. This lunch will include pasta salad, fruit, chicken croissant, something sweet and a beverage. The cost of the lunch will be $8.45 which includes tax. Please include this price on the registration form if you want a box lunch. You will pick up and eat your lunch at The Quilt Block after the morning annual meeting.

Please set aside Sept. 20, 2008 to join us in Valley Junction for the annual meeting. Connie will have her patterns available for sale at the annual meeting, and workshop participants can also purchase their pattern/s at the workshop. Non-guild members may register after Aug. 1st. Use this link to print the registration form and send it to the program chair listed on the form.
